Fencing Contracts

When you hire a contractor to install a fence in your yard, there needs to be a written agreement detailing the work, cost and other information to ensure both parties are on the same page. This is where a contract comes in handy. In general, the company you hire will have a contract for you to sign, but you should read it over to ensure all grounds are covered. No detail should be left out; this will help avoid confusion or disagreements during the course of the work.

What should be included in the contract?

  1. Contractor’s business name and all contact information (phone number, address, supervisor name, etc.)
  2. Description of the project, including expected start and completion dates
  3. Details such as location, perimeter, fence height
  4. Material use — brand, supplier, specific amount, cost, etc.
  5. Amount to be paid by homeowner, as well as when full amount should be paid
  6. Any additional costs that may occur, such as unexpected delays
  7. Consequences for missing dates, incomplete project or improper cleanup
  8. Proof of permits, license, insurance, and any other necessary documents
  9. Signature from both the homeowner and the contractor to show agreement

If you have questions or concerns about anything you see on the contract, discuss it with the contractor before signing the document. Don’t sign or agree to anything you are unsure about!
