Cleaning Your Vinyl Fence

Many homeowners choose vinyl fences for their property as they are an attractive option that requires much less maintenance than a wooden fence. However, in order to keep the vinyl looking shiny and new, you will have to clean it every once in a while. The material is strong and can handle a variety of cleaners — here are a few tips for keeping your vinyl fence clean.

GENERAL CLEANING

  1. Using the sprayer attachment on your regular garden hose, hose down the entire fence. Spray from bottom to top.
  2. Fill a bucket with warm water and dish soap.
  3. Dip an old cloth into the water and wipe areas of the fence that have tougher stains.
  4. For extra stubborn marks, use a non-abrasive scrubber.
  5. Spray down the fence again to rinse.

TOUGH STAINS

  1. Fill a bucket with one part bleach and five parts water (you can make this weaker or stronger depending on how dark your fence is).
  2. Dip an old cloth into the water and scrub at any stains.
  3. For extra stubborn stains, use a non-abrasive scrubber.
  4. If your fence is darker, rinse the scrubbed area right away.

GRASS STAINS, TAR, GREASE

  1. Start off with the general method laid out above.
  2. Wet an old cloth with mineral spirits or tar remover (be sure to wear gloves!).
  3. Rub gently at the stain — if you apply too much pressure, it can leave a mark.
  4. When the stain is gone, rinse with the hose.

If you have a dark colored fence and want to try one of these methods, test it first on a small, hidden area to ensure it won’t cause any damage. Make sure to clean your vinyl fence at least once a year to keep it looking its best; not to mention, the longer you leave the stains there, the more difficult they will be to remove.
