6 Fencing Considerations

You have decided to install a new fence – exciting! As much as you want to dive in and get the project started, here are some things you should think about.

  1. Know what you want. Ask yourself why you are installing a fence. If it is for keeping your dog in the yard, a chain-link fence may be enough. If you want to add privacy, you will want something tall and solid. Chances are you don’t have just one reason for a fence – whatever the purpose of the fence, it can function in many ways, but the first step is deciding what you are looking for to choose the one that will work best for you.
  2. Choose your materials. A white picket fence is always an attractive fencing option, but think about the commitment. Wood may require occasional sealing and can warp over time. If you can’t perform proper maintenance or simply don’t want to, you may want to look elsewhere. Vinyl is a low-maintenance material that offers the look of wood. Other material options include aluminum, steel and wrought iron.
  3. Mix it up. If cost is an issue, mix different types of fences. Wood picket fencing could be installed in the front, where most people will see it. It could be connected to chain link fencing in the backyard. This potentially saves installation costs, but will also reduce the amount of fence you will have to maintain.
  4. Do your research. Be sure to look into homeowners or neighborhood associations and building code officials regarding any contracts that may dictate fencing height, material, and even look. City and neighborhood rules may specify that the side of the fence with posts and rails must be placed toward the outside. You should also ask how far a fence must be set back from sidewalks and property lines.
  5. Hire professionals. Fence installation is much harder than it looks, so if you want it to achieve its optimal look and functionality, call a professional fence contractor.
  6. Create entrances. For safety, as well as convenience, plan at least two paths into a fenced area. Ensure that one of them is large enough to accommodate bulky outdoor equipment, such as a lawn mower or a large garbage can.
  7. Dress it up. Once your fence is in place, customize it with decorative posts or finials. Plant flowers to give a welcoming façade. Enjoy your new fence!
